The Taylor Swift and Marco Rubio School for Getting Even

Within minutes people began mocking Marco Rubio for taking a drink of water during his rebuttal of the President’s State of the Union Address. Rather than pouting, Rubio started selling his very own water bottles the next day to raise money for conservative causes.

When a journalist relentlessly belittled singer Taylor Swift, Swift fought back and wrote the song, Mean. The song won numerous awards and even sparked an anti-bullying movement among teens. You can read more here.

If you haven’t heard it, check out a few of the lyrics:

You, with your words like knives
And swords and weapons that you use against me,
You, have knocked me off my feet again,
Got me feeling like I’m nothing.
You, with your voice like nails on a chalkboard
Calling me out when I’m wounded.
You, pickin’ on the weaker man.

Well you can take me down,
With just one single blow.
But you don’t know, what you don’t know,

Someday, I’ll be living in a big old city,
And all you’re ever gonna be is mean.
Someday, I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me,
And all you’re ever gonna be is mean.
Why you gotta be so mean?

Who’s picking on you? How can you use it to springboard yourself into a better place?

I love stories of people turning criticism into success!

He was probably taking a drink of water to swallow the words he REALLY wanted to say. :)

    • Molly, thanks for stopping by to comment. I think he was in a rush to respond to an hour long speech and his lips got dry. I guess he’s human.

  3. Senator Rubio offered some true content and conveyed coherent conservative values. The media and the intolerant ‘left’ distract and deflect both as a strategy and a philosophy.

  4. I love Taylor Swift’s song “Mean”!! It has such a great message :) Thanks for sharing!
